HEPA air filters are made from very tiny glass fibers that are made into a tightly woven paper. This creates a filter consisting of a multitude of very small sieves that can capture extremely small particles, including some biological agents. Once trapped, contaminates and particles are not able to flow back into circulation, due to the highly absorbent pores of the HEPA air filter. HEPA air filters are largely considered the most effective type of air filter for solid particles, such as dust and other allergens. HEPA air filters remove 99.97% of particles down to 0.3 microns in size, almost 300 times smaller than the width of a human hair. HEPA air filters were developed by the Atomic Energy Commission during the second World War. They were originally designed to remove radio active dust from their plants. HEPA air filters are recommended by the U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security. HEPA air filters are effective for solid and liquid particles, but not effective for gaseous particles. The XJ-3800 HEPA & ionic air purifier incorporates other technologies that are effective against gaseous particles, such as ionization and activated carbon filtration.

Pretty sure the XJ-3800 has a 1 year opperating timer on it for the filter replacement light (i didn't keep track of the day i started using but it was definitely within a couple weeks). I let it go a couple months after that since I usualy wiped both sides of the HEPA/carbon filter off when I cleaned the rest regularly and figured the timer wasn't accurate. I was quite surprised when I actually replaced the filter - the difference the new one makes! Immediately I noticed a "fresher" smell coming out of the air purifier, and within a day of use I could smell the difference in my basement (about 1k sqft). So I would have to say the 1year change interval is probably accurate, and this filter works extremely well to keep the smells down.
It does have the built in carbon filter on one side, and the HEPA on the other. For a HEPA filter it's actually fairly cheap - most other hepa units have much more expensive replaceable filters. If you sign up for the subscribe and save you'll save a few bucks off it too.

I LOVE my Surround Air but with a huge hairy dog and living in a rural area, the purifier gets a real workout. The purifier tells you when the filter needs to be changed when a light comes on in the front. I was a bit concerned when I ordered the filter because one reviewer said it didn't fit property. Thankfully that was not my experience. The filter was a perfect fit and a GREAT deal. I'm going to keep a spare at all times! Oh - don't forget to reset the filter on the air purifier!!

I have been generally happy with this air purifier; the difference is noticeable. I am allergic to dust mites and I sleep better with this. Regarding the replacement HEPA filter; I was happy with the first 2 I ordered. However the last one had a strong Petroleum type odor. I was hoping it would fade after a week, but it took months of operation for the smell to fade considerably. I still smell it from time to time...
I plan to contact amazon or seller and see what they can do for me; I will update this post after that.
** CARE AND USE SUGGESTION **
I think this filter can easily last you a year. The first thing to go is the carbon; it stops absorbing odors after a certain amount of time (6-9 months). However if you vaccum both sides of this filter monthly the HEPA filtration function of the filter works well for a year possibly more.
