Hario Mizudashi Cold Brew Coffee Pot 600ml MCPN-7B - Check it Out

Hario does it again with their Cold Brew coffee maker. The simplicity is what makes this coffee brewer better than the next. All you have to do is place about 50g/1.8oz of your favorite coffee grounds and then top it off with water. Stir it for a bit until all the grounds have been soaked. Place it in your refrigerator overnight (~8hours) and enjoy the full bodied, rich taste of cold brewed coffee. There's nothing like it!

Never thought I'd love cold coffee
Rating by : Anonymous Reviewer,
I won't try to be authoritative, as there are loads of great reviews for the 600ml version of the Mizudashi. As others say, this coffee making method result in much lower acidity. In fact, it almost tastes like someone put a few grains of sugar in you cup. I love strong, hot black coffee, so I was really buying this for my wife. Turns out I quickly gained an appreciation for this Japanese style coffee. (If you've been to Japan and had the cold coffe in vending machines, the Mizudashi will bring back memories.) Shop around and you can find these for a great price. Much less than they go for in Japan.
Works well

I hate burned or overcooked coffee, and am tired of replacing burned-out coffeemakers. Cold-brew is the best solution, and this appears to be a good system at little expense, especially for a person who lives alone. Several pointers:
The directions are in Japanese, and indicate specific amounts of coffee and brewing times. Toss that, and do what works for you.
I grind 1/3 cup beans, and brew for 24 hours. Depending on the quality and quantity of the beans, you may need to dilute the coffee to taste. I just started using 2 lb Whole Bean Coffee Bagwhich is ideal.
The directions evidently call for using chopsticks to stir the slurry. I got a pair, and they work fine in the tall skinny container.
Enjoy the mellow.
Great for the cold brewer

I've been trying different methods for cold brewing and this is by far the best. No paper filtering is required. All of the directions are in Japanese but that's really not a problem as it's pretty straightforward. But I believe it recommends course ground coffee. I use the drip grind you buy in stores for a few reasons. The super fine mesh catches the most of it. I've found the key is not to stir. Just carefully pour the water over the coffee and let the water soak in. The only drawback for me is that you have to make a certain amount or the coffee won't soak effectively. I only drink a cup a day but a cup of liquid won't reach the inner basket holding the coffee. So I end up making two days worth. But I have found that if I want a smaller amount of coffee, I can fill the filter and set it in a coffee cup, then just pour the water into the basket and let it soak. It works just as well. If you decide to go with this unit, price shop it. Seattle Coffee Gear has it for less than half at the time of this review.
Other methods I've tried: simply soaking my coffee in water and running it through a strainer lined with a paper filter. That worked but was clunky and sometimes messy. I then bought a Ronco brewer which came without the filters, which are no longer made, so I returned that one without even trying it. I next went to a french press. Somewhat cleaner but either required using course ground coffee or running it through a paper filter. So this has been the best option - simple and easy clean up and no wasting a paper filter daily.
