Oster Extra-Large Digital Toaster Oven with Convection Bake

A useful addition to any busy kitchen, Oster's TSSTTVXLDG extra-large digital toaster oven--beautifully housed in brushed stainless steel--takes countertop cooking to a whole new level. Whether it's the holidays and relatives are gathering for a celebratory feast, or it's simply a Tuesday night and a quick healthy meal is on the menu, the countertop oven offers a roomy interior and exceptional versatility that not only accommodates, but inspires.

Spacious Interior

The toaster oven works well as a second oven or as an energy-efficient alternative to turning on the full-size oven, though no need to think small thanks to its extra-large interior. Bake anything from a family-size 16-inch frozen or take-and-bake pizza to a whole chicken, a 13-by-9-inch casserole, or a pan of bread sticks or cinnamon rolls. It can even toast up to 14 slices of bread at a time.

The oven provides a removable baking pan and broil rack for baking, broiling and grilling, as well as two removable wire racks that slide neatly into place. Two oven-rack positions allow for multi-level cooking options--use just one rack in the lower position (great for cooking a tall roast) or both racks simultaneously (better for busting out batches of oatmeal chocolate-chip cookies).

Make anything from crispy-crust pizza to homemade chocolate-chip cookies and more.
Digital Controls and Convection Technology

Digital controls keep things simple for both the novice and experienced home chef alike. Simply press the easy-clean touch-pad to make the desired selection. Functions include Toast, Bake, Broil, Warm, Defrost, and Pizza.

There's also a Convection Bake setting that uses turbo convection-heat technology, which means more even browning and faster results--without compromising on quality. With Convection Bake, hot air circulates throughout the oven's interior, just like with a high-end full-size oven, which means it's possible to effortlessly achieve juicy meat and flavorful, gently cooked vegetables, as well as crispy edges and flakey crusts.

Even more, the user-friendly control panel provides a Temp button with up and down arrows for increasing or decreasing the cooking temperature (from 150 to 450 degrees F) and a Timer button with up and down arrows for setting the 90-minute timer, which shuts off automatically once the desired time has ended. The control panel also includes a clock digitally displaying the time of day.

Sleek Design

Thoughtfully constructed, the extra-large digital toaster oven sports a large, fully transparent, glass door that makes it possible to keep an eye on cooking food without letting heat escape by having to open the door. It also comes with a full-length cool-touch door handle, a smooth interior that cleans up in a snap, and an external removable crumb tray.

Where to begin? The toaster oven provides a variety of mouthwatering recipes like brie and artichoke bruschetta, cinnamon toast, and honey mustard chicken with spicy pecan cornflake crust, as well as mustard and herb pork tenderloin with roasted potatoes and roasted turkey breast with aromatic vegetables. Attractively housed in brushed stainless steel, the extra-large toaster oven measures 20 inches long by 24 inches wide by 13 inches high.

A time and energy saver at a great price - let's see how long it lasts
Rating by : Smart Shopper, rating 4.0 of 5.0

UPDATE (5/24/13):

This is a nice oven, but with one annoying problem. Unless I set the timer for longer than I plan to bake, it will automatically shut off in the middle of baking. It's a very handy appliance to have, though, and it seems to be holding up. I'm upgrading my rating to 4 stars. Once I know whether or not this appliance will go the distance (I expect it to last), I'll upgrade it to 5 starts. I'm still waiting to see if it lasts.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:

I bought this countertop oven because my 3 daughters (2 in college; 1 in high school) come home hungry and use my large wall oven to make their meals. In the interest of saving a little energy, I searched for a toaster oven. This one meets all of my criteria. It's large enough to hold regular-sized pans, and it has a convection feature to shorten cooking time and/or lower oven temp.

To give an example, today my daughter baked chicken that would normally bake for 30 minutes in a 350-degree oven. In this Oster toaster oven, using the convection bake feature, she was able to bake it for 25 minutes at 300 degrees. Later in the afternoon when I got home from work, I popped some frozen cod in there. The cod normally take 22 minutes to bake at 425 degrees. With the convection feature, they took 14 minutes at 425 degrees. And these shortened cooking times do not take into account the fact that the toaster oven preheats a lot faster than the wall oven, and cools off a lot faster as well. Thus, my kitchen doesn't get so hot. This is going to be great during the hot summer months!

I reserve the right to edit this review if the oven doesn't perform well or starts giving trouble. I've always been skeptical of digital appliances, and this toaster oven only has a 1-year warranty. Still, I wasn't prepared to pay too much for a countertop oven, and Amazon offered this at a great price. Also, this item has received plenty of favorable reviews, so I'm hopeful I made the right choice.

This is a 1500-watt oven. The cord is short, which I happen to appreciate.

The actual rack dimensions are 15.75" wide x 12" deep at shortest point (15" deep at the longest point where the oven bulges out in the back). I did email Oster to ask what the interior dimensions were. Their reply was that it's large enough to fit a 13" x 9" pan. Obviously, they didn't answer my question, and I had to measure it myself.

Yes, you can fit a 13" x 9" pan in there, as long as its handles are short.

Allowing for proper air circulation, you can easily fit a 12" pizza pan in there. Because of the bulge, a 13" pizza pan would also work. I've seen reviews on the internet that say you can fit a 16" pizza pan in there. No way! Just one look at the rack dimensions will tell you that's not possible. My 15" round pizza pan fits in there, but there's no space for air to circulate, so I do not plan to use that pan in this oven.

The broiler pan that came with the oven measures 15" x 12" and takes up most of the available rack space.

Oster says not to use aluminum foil inside the oven--not even to line pans--because the foil can raise the oven temperature too much. The manual also says to use extreme caution with any bakeware not made of metal or glass. Pyrex and Anchor Hocking both say their bakeware are not toaster oven safe, so...

This toaster oven needs at least 6" of clearance on all sides, so make sure you have enough space before you order this huge thing. IT IS LARGE!

The digital controls are not as user friendly as my Frigidaire Professional wall oven, but considering the price difference between the two ovens, I'd say you get what you pay for.

The preheat feature of this toaster oven is royally annoying, to put it mildly. You have to go through a series of steps to enter the temperature and 7-minute preheat time, after which the oven light will go off and the word "END" appears. In other words, the oven shuts off at the end of the 7-minute preheat period. How stupid is that? I'd like to meet the genious who designed it that way! At any rate, at this stage, you have to re-enter the desired oven temperature before placing your food in the oven to bake. I called Oster about this, and they said the way to get around this is to set the oven to the desired temperature, wait 7 minutes, and then place the food in the oven. This is a lot simpler, in my opinion, so I will not be using the preheat feature from now on.

Don't bother setting the clock. The manual says to unplug the oven when not in use. The clock will then have to be reset when you plug the oven back in. Who has time for that?

Because I'm still learning how to use the convection bake feature, I have not used the oven timer. This is because I do not want the oven to automatically shut off. Actually, I think it's best to use a different timer (not the toaster oven timer) and manually shut off the oven at the end of the baking time. A good rule to follow is: Keep a watchful eye on what you're baking, broiling or toasting.

As other reviewers have pointed out, this toaster oven does not have an interior light. I would have been willing to pay a little more for that feature, but don't think it's a big deal. In my brightly lit kitchen, it's easy to check food by looking through the toaster oven's large glass door. Using a flashlight, as one reviewer suggests, would also work. 'Tis better to light a candle than curse the darkness. :)

Speaking of the door, it does not flop down, but it does open easily. It will go all the way down to countertop level, but that's a good thing. It makes it easier to get the food out of the oven. Since the door is made of glass, I suggest being gentle with it. The door looks sturdy and I'm not worried about it, but I don't think it's a good idea to handle it roughly or carelessly.

As for the oven getting hot, of course it gets hot! Any appliance that cooks with this much heat is going to get hot. Just be sensible and use oven mitts to open the door and remove food. It's as simple as that.

Terrific toaster oven!

This oven is wonderful to use. Simple to operate, stays true to temp.

I've made chicken, cookies, fresh peach pie(gorgeous crust with the convection), garlic toast and steak in this thing, all with excellent results. The size is magnificent for a toaster oven. I baked two pans of cookies at the same time.

I can fit two bread loaf pans(9 by 5), with the top rack removed. I can fit two 9 by 13 pyrex cake pans in, as well. If you're looking for space for lots of cooking options, this one is worth a look. Works like a charm.

Just wanted to add: this oven makes an excellent dough-proofer. Hit the 'warm' button and let it heat up a few moments, turn it off, and pop in your bowl of dough. My BIG kitchen aid 6 qt mixing bowl fits in this oven...wow..that surprised me.

Best Toaster Over EVER

I bought this from Wal-Mart over a year ago and my family of five keeps in running for two hours or more each night baking pizza, pot pies etc... It's really large and holds full size pizzas. You can bake so many things in this oven and safe the heat and electric cost of running the big oven. Never had a problem with it. Would buy it again if this one ever dies.
