The picture shows a four coil heating element, but the unit only has three. I tried to boil about 6 cups of water, and it took a full half-hour to come to a boil, and then it was only a light simmer The element heats quickly, but it cycles off after about 45 seconds then back on in another 15 or so. With that cycle, it just wasn't practical for that task. It does a decent job for other cooking tasks, but I bought this unit because of the reviews that specifically claimed that it boils water quickly, which certainly was not my experience.

Great for reheating

I've had this for 5 months, and I use it every weekday for reheating lunches at work in Pyrex 6-Cup dishes. When reheating, I take the Pyrex out of the fridge, set it on the burner, and set the dial to 2. If you set it to 3 or higher it will break the Pyrex dish in a rather loud explosion. I haven't used it for cooking so I can't comment on that. I'm getting a second one for a co-worker who uses mine all the time for the same purpose. It has two lights, a red one to tell you it's plugged in, and a green one to tell you it's heating. I wish it had a light to tell you that it's hot instead of a light that tells you when it's plugged in. What good does that do anyway?
Update: Looks like the new ones have printed numbers on the dial, which are in a different spot than the old style which was molded on. If yours has black printed numbers, turn it to the third raised bump, which is one bump after it first "clicks". It will be before the 1. If you turn it to 2 with the new dial, you will break your Pyrex.
