2 filters washable and reusable says the item discription. No directions on how to "wash" them were included, but I can tell you that washing with water only ruined the filter. You can brush some of the dirt off the filter in lieu of cleaning it with water, but what did they mean by "washing"? We bought two and one cannot be used now. If we had known that they were not washable, we would have saved a few dollars and just bought one filter.
They do the job but they're NOT washable!

I have tried other Dirt Devil replacement filters but opted to buy three packages of the 2-pack (that's six filters)from this company because they were described as "washable and reusable." I don't take issue at all with the product performance. They worked well until they appeared to need a washing. I followed the instructions exactly and my filters ended up getting water-stained and musty-smelling. Basically, I had to toss them. The six filters have lasted me only five months and we're not talking about a home with pet dander and dirt tracked in. Perhaps if this company removes the claim that the filters are washable and reusable, I'd purchase from it again. For now, I will have to pass.

I'm just about to re-order my replacements after reusing the same filter for almost a year before it finally broke down.
First off, for those of you who do not know - HEPA means 'High Efficiency Particulate Air' filtration system, so it should clean better and more effectively then the factory paper filters. This does mean it needs cleaning more frequently - but it also means it is cleanING your air and carpet, furniture etc. more effectively (especially if you have two cats in a tiny apartment, like our family!).
Secondly - I'm not sure what washing instructions come with these filters, as I got my last filter without any. However -- I clean my filters by throwing them in with a small load of laundry on a gentle cycle so that the filter gets washed, lightly agitated, and rinsed without getting beaten all to heck and back (and I make sure to use a double dose of detergent to make sure it gets everything extra squeaky clean as well). Then I simply tip it at an angle on top of my dryer, one side for half a day, and then flip it over and let the other half dry. I usually wash my filter weekly, but I vacuum 3-4 times a week and yours might not need to be washed as often (or as thoroughly) as mine. As I've mentioned, I have two pets and three adults in a small space, making lots of high traffic areas that I attack pretty vigorously.
As earlier stated, I've been doing that for almost a year and got amazing usage out of my last filter, and can hardly wait to see how far I get on two of them! My last one wasn't even a HEPA, so as someone who suffers from allergies I am doubly excited and all a tingle waiting for these filters to arrive! I am passionate about my vacuuming, hehe.)
